Protestation of the Greater Poland land elders against the Jews of Kalisz and Leszno regarding the revolt in the land

The Greater Poland Land Elders Joachim Smol and Mendel Herc protest against a group of Jews from Kalisz and Leszno, who in April 1686 invaded the room near the Kalisz synagogue, removing the authorities of the kahal by force and replacing them with elders elected by themselves. The rebels also undertook a number of actions against the legal authorities of the land and the local Jews. They turned to the nobility, demanding that the latter would no longer give the protestees more loans; they made it difficult for the Jewish common people to conduct commercial activities, refused to pay state taxes, and exposed the land elders to court costs. In addition, they violated the decree of the Kalisz voivode and encouraged the rebellion of Jewish towns, leading to the gathering of separatist authorities of the Greater Poland region at their own Jewish council.
